Joomla 2.5.0 upgrade details

1. Take a backup, I recommend Akeeba backup.

2. In the Extensions Manager click on Update and refresh the cache.

3. When the 2.5.0 update is displayed, select it and click on the Install button.

4. Wait a while, until the screen is refreshed. You may or may not see some SQL error messages about adding a column to some tables. [On a test system these were shown but on the live site these did not appear].

5. Whether you see any messages or not, click on the Database tab. If you do not see the Database tab then it is likely that none of the 2.5.0 update was performed. I would suggest in this circumstance, reloading the site from the backup that you took in step 1 above.

6. If you see any errors reported click on the Fix button, which should bring the database up to date. I would suggest that at this point you would be wise to clear out your browser cache. Close down the browser and restart it again, if you are not sure how to clear the cache.

7. Now in the Extensions manager (again), click on the discover tab and purge the cache.

8. Now click the discover icon.

9. You will be presented with a list of items discovered. Be aware that some of them are displayed 3 times.

10. If you cleared your browsers cache you will be able to select the individual items to install. Be very careful that you do not select the multiple items, you only want the items once. Clicking on two or all three of the identical items installs them multiple times. Not easy to get rid of them if you do this.

11. If you did not clear your browsers cache you have to select all the items on the page by selecting the top box over the items, and then deselect the multiple copies.

12. Now that you have only unique items selected click on the Install icon.

13. Once the screen comes back to you, purge the cache by clicking on the Purge cache icon and click on Discover icon again. You will notice that the previous duplicate items do not reappear for the unique items you installed.

14. Repeat from step 9 again until, when you refresh the cache no more items are displayed.

15. If you didn't do so before now is a good time to clear your browsers cache, and the site cache's from the Site Maintenance list.

16. Now test out the front end pages.

17. Hopefully you will find that everything is working fine. If not you can either fix the problems you discover or restore the backup you took in step 1 above.

18. You can now start to configure any of the new features that you desire, and that you have already tested out on your test system.
