Rialto Component

This Macrotone Consulting Rialto component is a Classified Advertisements component. Wikipedia defines Classified advertising as a form of advertising which is particularly common in newspapers, online and other periodicals which may be sold or distributed free of charge. Advertisements in a newspaper are typically short, as they are charged for by the line, and one newspaper column wide. An advertisement as seen in a newspaper, magazine, or the like is generally dealing with offers or requests for jobs, houses, apartments, used cars, and the like. The Joomla component permits a site to accept such advertisements from its registered members and acts as a conduit between purchaser and seller.

The name is derived from a historic market district of Venice, Italy, named the Rialto, located close to the Grand Canal and to the 16th-century Rialto Bridge. It became the business centre of medieval and renaissance Venice. Since that time the word has come to have a few other meanings such as 'agora', 'forum', 'marketplace', 'shoppingplace' etc.

The Rialto component is based upon an old Joomla 2.5 component by Codingfish named Marketplace which is no longer supported by its originator. It has been extensively modified and runs only on Joomla 3.4 and above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Rialto Overview

The documentation in PDF format and also as web pages is available upon the site. [Please see links under 'Joomla Extensions' on the site.] This document only presents a brief overview of the functionality.

There are four main parts to the component, users (who are Joomla registered user), categories, labels and entries (which are the individual advert items.)

Users: Within the component users if authorised, can create new Rialto items. All registered users may view and contact the user who is the owner of the items advertised. In addition some users may be specific component moderators. Unregistered user may view Rialto items but are (currently) required to register in order to be able to contact the item owners. Contact is made using generated email messaging.

Categories: These are distinct 'category like' items, which may or may not consists of separate sub-categories. i.e. If we have a main category named 'Motors', we may have sub-projects named 'General Motors', Vauxhall', 'Honda' etc. As many levels of sub category can be created as desired but usually two or three is sufficient for most categories. Categories have a short description.

Labels: Labels are user to differentiate between the various items (entries) within a category. Typically Labels are things such as 'For Sale', 'Wanted', 'For Hire' etc. An entry items is assigned at least one label.

Entries: An entry is a specific item being advertised. An entry will have assigned one (or more) labels and be part of a specified category. An entry will have several attributes, some derived from the entry owner, such as a location address. Other attributes such as 'condition', 'price', etc, are specific to the individual item. An entry item have have up to ten images associated with it.

Most of the activities performed by the component take place in the front end, with the registered user creating their item, updating it and ultimately removing it when the item has expired or otherwise been disposed of. The back end administrator can also perform any required activity upon the entries as well, but primarily defines the required settings for the individual site.

We trust this brief overview is sufficient to cover the main features of the components and you are requested to look at the latest PDF documentation for more information.

If you find this component useful, you are requested to raise a review on the Joomla Extensions Directory, and possibly consider making a donation to assist in providing support and future enhancements.
